We want everyone who visits Curatescape websites to feel welcome and find the experience rewarding. The following applies to the open source Curatescape tools, including the Curatescape theme and plugins for the Omeka content management system. For information about the accessibility of Omeka itself, please see the Omeka Accessibility Statement.
Goals
To help us make Curatescape websites a positive place for everyone, we’ve been using the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities, and more user-friendly for everyone.
The guidelines have three levels of accessibility (A, AA and AAA). We’ve chosen Level AA as the target for Curatescape.
Current Status
We’re working hard to achieve our goal of Level AA accessibility, but we realize there are some areas that still need improving and others that require special attention from content creators. The following information explains what we’re doing to make that happen and what you can do to make sure your project meets the success criteria.
Level A/AA success criteria 1.2.1 – 1.2.4:
Users are encouraged to add alt text for uploaded image files and a complete metadata record for all uploaded files, including audio, video, and images. This metadata is used to create captions and provide text-equivalent information for visual and time-based media. Likewise, users are encouraged to utilize the Street Address and Access Information fields to add text-equivalent information to interactive maps on item/story pages. These steps will bring your project into compliance with the success criteria.
Level AA success criteria 1.2.5:
Omeka does not have built-in support for audio transcripts for video content. Project administrators are encouraged to use videos that were created with accessibility in mind and may choose to upload a separate audio version of video content in order to meet the success criteria.
